ArgentPur GaN-FET mono amplifiers by Paul Dallas

To say I’ve fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole is a massive understatement. Perry is a seasoned veteran in this game and has been doing this for years. Our trip to the High End 2026 in Vienna was absolutely out of this world for me. For just as long, he’s been nagging me to write on affordable wares, but I’ve always been too hesitant to take the plunge. Well, I finally gave in. Perry let me cut my teeth on a review of the Starke Sound Beta 5 and Beta 7 bookshelf loudspeakers. It was my very first review, and I actually felt good writing it.

The Silver Pieces of Audio Bliss

After a stay at my Perry house, he gave me a pair of ArgentPur GaN-FET Monoblock power amplifiers ($6,000/pair) for me to put through their paces. Let me tell you right off the bat: these are some seriously good-sounding pieces of gear.

Designed by engineer and musician Ernest Meunier (founder of ArgentPur), these blocks use Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors. For those unfamiliar with the tech, a GaN-FET transistor acts like a super-fast electronic switch. In an audio amplifier, these transistors rapidly switch on and off to amplify the incoming audio signal before driving your speakers. These are some fantastic-looking amplifiers, too. The chassis is constructed from a solid piece of machined aluminum featuring top and bottom panel vibration damping. Dimensions are 8.5″ W x 12.5 D x 3.5″ H. They weigh in at 7lbs (3.3 kg), a piece that is nothing compared to the 150-lb behemoths audiophiles are used to having, and they can be placed side by side with minimal real estate taken up. Bringing up the rear, you have 1 Balanced XLR input on each and 1 single-ended input. Both of which are of high quality. Also included are very well-made silver-plated binding posts. The footers are made from a thick Sortbothane material for acoustic isolation. In other words, vibrations are kept at a minimum.

To keep the signal path as clean as possible, I went completely pre-amp-free using the LAIV Audio Crescendo R2R DAC DAC (running balanced XLR outputs directly into the monoblocks) while using my HP Laptop for streaming via TIDAL. A pair of Channel Islands Audio (CIAudio) mini-monitors ($3,000/pair) was used throughout. In addition to the ArgentPur GaN-FET Monos, there was a pair of AgPur 10 speaker cables (which I used toward the end of my evaluation and ultimately replaced my Straightwire Expressivo Grande II cables).

Listening Sessions: Jazz and Legendary Vocals

After letting the amplifiers warm up for about an hour to get everything properly settled, I fired up Roy Hargrove’s “Strasbourg / St. Denis” via TIDAL. It’s an upbeat, rhythmic tune with a bass-driven undercurrent, and I was quite surprised how well the ArgentPur GaN-FETs handled this classic headbanger. The low end was so tight, clean, and articulate; it was hard to believe. Hargrove’s trumpet was clean, clear, and incredibly easy on the ears without ever sounding overpowering, bright, or even aggressive. Whenever I am comfortable, I close my eyes and try to forget I’m listening to electronics. I have to admit, it was easier than I thought listening through the ArgentPur GaN-FETs. Instrument separation and imaging made it effortless to pinpoint exactly where every musician was placed on the stage. It felt like he was performing right there in my living room.

Next, I wanted to see how these amps interpreted a legendary vocal performance and handled the noise floor. I put on Karen Carpenter’s legendary 1970 classic “We’ve Only Just Begun” to hear the nuances and the background quietness. Once again, these amps aced the test. There was absolutely no thinness to her voice despite this dated recording. In fact, and much to my surprise, the sound via the ArgentPur GaN-FETs was full, rich, and beautifully articulated. I could go on and on over the virtues of the ArgentPur GaN-FET monos. They have what I would describe as a remarkably delicate touch, and not once during my evaluation did they even remotely appear heavy-handed, despite their 250-watt-per-side specs.

After a few weeks of becoming fully acquainted with the ArgentPur sound, I swapped out my Straightwire cables and placed the ArgentPur 10 speaker cables in the system (Greg Voth wrote glowingly on the AgPur 13 here). Reading on their website that these are silver-plated, multi-stranded designs, I must admit I thought the sound would be somewhat brighter than my reference Straightwire. I was taken aback to discover the sound was neither bright nor overly shiny. It was natural and rich, with a very open, airy quality that I found quite attractive. Bass had a slightly tighter punch, which makes it easy to understand why these two make a very successful match.  

The Final Verdict

It is incredible to see how far designers have come in bringing Class D technology up to par with traditional designs. I had to remind myself over and over that these ArgentPur GaN-FET monos deliver a whopping 250 watts per chassis, are super cool to the touch, and yet weigh only 7 lbs each. If you are looking for a spectacular pair of amplifiers that sound outstanding regardless of what you throw at them—whether it’s Jazz, Classical, contemporary or otherwise—the ArgentPur GaN-FET monoblocks are an excellent choice.
